Svalbard Archipelago, Norway

The Svalbard archipelago sits in the Arctic Ocean, halfway between Norway and the North Pole. The name Svalbard means "cold coasts," and it's easy to see why, considering that it is home to Norway's largest glacier, Austfonna, as well as its own species of reindeer. Depending on the time of year, visitors can kayak, hike, ski, snowmobile or dogsled. Those more interested in staying out of the cold can visit the Longyearbyen Church, a local gallery or Svalbard Museum. Visitors can also take a trip to one of the old coal mines, but keep an eye out for Santa Claus -- he lives there!
