Sortland, Norway

This cruise destination fittingly is referred to as the "Blue City," thanks to the monochromatic color scheme in which almost all of its buildings have been painted. The town features art exhibits, a church built in 1901 and a jazz festival each fall. Hikers can trek to the top of Steiroheia, a nearby mountain, for unforgettable views of the surrounding scenery. Despite its location north of the Arctic Circle, the area boasts a relatively mild climate. Sortland is part of the Vesteralen archipelago, and bridges between the islands open up a world of adventure, from fishing expeditions to kayaking and cycling excursions. Nature safaris offer the chance to see moose, mink, golden eagles, hawks and falcons. Whales also can be spotted year round. The midnight sun brings 24-hour daylight in the summer, while winter is the time to bask in the brilliance of the northern lights.
