Mehamn, Norway

Located on the Vedvik peninsula, Mehamn is considered the northernmost fishing village in the world. Also the administrative center of Gamvik Municipality, this remote town has around 800 residents and is the site of one of Norway's earliest environmental movements, a protest of whaling by local fishermen in 1903. Beyond boats, snowmobiles are the preferred method of transportation, and a snowmobile safari is a prime way to enjoy the region's high mountains, deep canyons and fjords. Special evening excursions travel by the light of the aurora borealis. Spend time deep-sea fishing for cod, halibut and wolffish, cruising the coastline in a speedboat or exploring the open terrain on cross-country skis or snowshoes. A visit to Cape Nordkinn, the northernmost point of Europe, also is highly recommended.
